When What Kids Need to Succeed was first published I often fielded a question that surprised me.  Time and again people asked:  What do you mean by success?

Here’s the thing….  although I’ve had the opportunity to share some wonderful stories and strategies, I think it would be presumptuous for me to define success for another family.  Isn’t that  your job?

Some people find it difficult to talk about (or define) success.  We are conditioned to be modest, to downplay our passions and ambitions. And while most parents want our children to develop a level of confidence from their achievements, we sure don’t appreciate seeing that “entitled sports star mentality” when it’s time to do homework or wash the dishes.

We included a variety of definitions  of “to succeed” in the book but there’s one I share as often as I can.  It’s not generally the one that first springs to mind for most of us.  I hope it’s one that unites us.

“Succeed” also means “to follow.”

And don’t all parents strive to prepare the next generation to take their place in the adult world?
